The GFS Hostel & Guest Rooms
In its effort to meet the needs of women, the GFS sought to provide safe accommodation to help young girls coming from rural areas to the city for employment.

History of Lodging FacilitiesĀ
In its effort to meet the needs of women, the GFS sought to provide safe accommodation to help young girls coming from rural areas to the city for employment. Records indicate that the first “lodge” was started in 1913 in Conway House in Rosmead Place. In 1916, the lodge was moved to Leyland House and in 1918, it moved to Raemoir in Turret Road.
GFS Hostel for Working GirlsĀ
Members of the Society realised that a permanent lodge was required and began raising funds. Work began on a new building behind the Hall in 1950, and the present hostel for working women from the outstations was opened and blessed by Rt. Rev. A. Graham Campbell, Bishop of Colombo, on Sept. 21, 1957.
Since then, for the past many years, the GFS has provided subsidised accommodation to girls of all races and religions in the heart of the city. They are given opportunities to further their studies, pursue their chosen careers, secure good jobs, assist their families and build a successful future. The GFS is justifiably proud of the role it has played over the years in the empowerment of young women.
However, as the number of girls in search of employment in the capital progressively increases, so does the demand for safe lodging facilities. It is in response to this urgent need that the GFS is working towards the expansion of the present Hostel / setting up of a new Hostel, to provide increased and better facilities to the girls of our land at reasonable rates.
This is the main service project of the GFS, which is currently on hold as it needs urgent renovation.
